Eurostar launches new routes: direct trains from London to Geneva and Frankfurt

Lizet Wesselman - 11/06/2025

Eurostar launches new routes connecting London directly to Frankfurt and Geneva, as part of a €2 billion investment in a next-generation train fleet. The expansion marks a major leap forward for sustainable travel in Europe and positions rail as a serious alternative to short-haul flights.

With up to 50 new trains joining the network from the early 2030s, the new Eurostar routes will cut travel times to around five hours—without airport queues or transfers. The move supports Eurostar’s ambition to carry 30 million passengers annually and meet growing demand for low-emission, cross-border travel.

Eurostar routes: fast, direct, and green

The newly announced routes include:

  • London–Frankfurt
  • London–Geneva
  • Amsterdam/Brussels–Geneva

These new Eurostar routes cater to both business and leisure travellers, combining speed and comfort with a strong focus on sustainability.

“With our new fleet, new destinations will become a reality—especially direct trains between London and Germany, and between London and Switzerland for the first time,” said Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave. “A new golden age of sustainable international travel has begun.”

Record growth fuels new investments

The announcement follows Eurostar’s strongest year to date. In 2024, the company carried 19.5 million passengers—a 5% increase on the previous year—and generated €2 billion in revenue. EBITDA reached €346 million, despite economic pressures such as inflation and rising fixed costs.

High-performing Eurostar routes included London–Paris (+280,000 passengers), London–Brussels, and Paris–Brussels. The direct London–Amsterdam service, resumed in early 2025, will gain a fourth daily train in September and a fifth by December.

Ready for the future

Eurostar’s fleet will grow from 51 to 67 trains with the new investment. The new trains will be designed for high-speed, energy-efficient travel, with improvements in comfort, connectivity and accessibility. They will be introduced gradually across the network from the early 2030s.

Alain Krakovitch, Chairman of Eurostar Group, commented: “2024 was an exceptional year, marked by the Olympic Games. Eurostar is well on its way to reaching 30 million passengers annually, and our ambition to expand across Europe remains strong.”

A bold vision for rail in Europe

With Eurostar launching new routes, the competitive landscape in European travel is set to shift. Short-haul flights to cities like Frankfurt and Geneva will face new pressure, as more passengers opt for rail over air. Tourism and business sectors along the new corridors are expected to benefit from the improved accessibility.

Eurostar’s expansion signals a clear commitment to greener, smarter travel. The rise of new Eurostar routes reflects a wider shift in public demand—away from air travel and toward sustainable alternatives.

The future of international travel is pulling into the station—and Eurostar is leading the way.
